Around The Table | Lifestylez Family Ministries

There are seasons in life when the journey seems much longer than we anticipated.

We begin with enthusiasm, faith, and expectation. We pray, make decisions, take steps forward, and believe that we are moving towards something meaningful.

Yet somewhere along the road, progress seems to slow.

Doors remain closed. Prayers appear unanswered. Circumstances become more difficult rather than easier.

And eventually, a question begins to form in our hearts:

Lord, why is this taking so long?

Perhaps you have asked that question yourself.

Maybe you are waiting for employment, financial stability, healing, restoration in a relationship, or clarity concerning a decision that could change your family’s future.

Whatever the circumstances, waiting can become one of the most challenging parts of our walk with God.

But what does Scripture actually teach us about these seasons?

1. The Journey May Be Longer Than We Expected

Consider Joseph.

As a young man, Joseph received dreams that pointed towards an extraordinary future (Genesis 37:5–11).

Yet, his journey did not unfold as anyone might have imagined.

He experienced betrayal by his brothers, separation from his family, slavery, false accusation, and imprisonment before eventually being placed in a position of authority in Egypt.

Between the dreams and their fulfilment lay years of circumstances that appeared completely contrary to what had been revealed.

Joseph could not see the entire journey from the beginning.

Neither can we.

However, we must be careful not to make Joseph’s experience into a universal promise that every disappointment will eventually lead to earthly success.

Scripture records God’s particular purpose in Joseph’s life. His story encourages us to trust God’s sovereignty, not to presume that our personal ambitions carry the same promise.

The lesson is not that every dream will come true. It is that God remains faithful even when we cannot see what He is doing.

2. Patience Is More Than Simply Waiting

James writes:

“Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”

James 1:3–4 (KJV)

Biblical patience is not merely sitting still until our circumstances improve.

It involves endurance, perseverance, and steadfastness in the midst of difficulties.

James teaches that the testing of faith can produce patience and contribute to spiritual maturity.

That does not mean suffering is pleasant or that Christians must pretend to enjoy hardship.

Nor does it mean every painful circumstance has been directly sent by God.

It means that trials need not be spiritually wasted.

Even when we cannot change our immediate circumstances, we can choose how we respond.

Will we become bitter, or will we continue pursuing holiness?

Will we abandon prayer, or will we remain in fellowship with our Father?

Will disappointment cause us to compromise our convictions, or will we continue doing what is right?

The journey may be difficult, but our response during the journey matters.

3. Faithfulness Does Not Guarantee Immediate Results

Galatians 6:9 offers this encouragement:

“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

Galatians 6:9 (KJV)

These words were written in the context of sowing to the Spirit, doing good, and persevering in Godly living.

They are not a guarantee that every business venture will succeed, every financial challenge will disappear, or every personal goal will be achieved on our preferred timetable.

Instead, Paul encourages believers not to abandon what is right simply because the results are not immediately visible.

That distinction is important.

We are called to remain faithful to God, not to demand that God fulfil our timetable.

There may be moments when perseverance means continuing along the same path.

There may also be moments when wisdom requires us to change direction, seek counsel, acknowledge mistakes, or release an ambition that has become more important to us than obedience.

Faithfulness and stubbornness are not the same thing.

One submits to God’s will.

The other can insist upon its own.

4. When Waiting Becomes Weariness

There is a difference between patiently awaiting an outcome and becoming exhausted by the uncertainty surrounding it.

Sometimes the greatest challenge is not the difficulty itself, but the absence of any indication of when it will end.

We pray, yet the answer remains unclear.

We work, yet the breakthrough does not come.

We try to do what is right, yet the situation seems unchanged.

During such seasons, it can become tempting to interpret silence as abandonment.

But Scripture does not teach that God’s presence depends upon our ability to recognise immediate progress.

The psalmist writes:

“Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.”

Psalm 27:14 (KJV)

Notice where our attention is directed.

Not towards the certainty of a particular earthly outcome, but towards the Lord Himself.

Our circumstances may remain uncertain, but our relationship with God need not be governed by that uncertainty.

We may bring our questions, disappointments, and fears honestly before Him.

Faith does not require us to pretend that we are never tired.

It calls us to continue trusting the One to whom we belong.

5. What Should We Do While We Wait?

Waiting on God is not an excuse for irresponsibility or inactivity.

There are practical responsibilities we must continue fulfilling, even during difficult seasons.

We should continue praying, studying Scripture, caring for our families, working diligently where opportunities exist, and treating others with love and integrity.

We should also remain willing to examine our own choices.

Have we confused a personal desire with God’s calling?

Are we resisting wise correction because it challenges what we want?

Have we neglected responsibilities while waiting for a dramatic intervention?

Or are we genuinely doing what we can, faithfully and responsibly, while trusting God with what remains outside our control?

These are questions worth bringing before the Lord in prayer.

Sometimes the next faithful step is not extraordinary.

It may simply be getting up tomorrow, fulfilling our responsibilities, and refusing to surrender our convictions to discouragement.

And sometimes that is where perseverance becomes most evident.

Around The Table — A Personal Reflection

Perhaps today you find yourself somewhere between where you started and where you expected to be.

The journey has been longer, harder, and more uncertain than you imagined.

You may not understand why certain doors have closed or why answers have taken so long.

But allow me to encourage you with this:

Do not measure God’s faithfulness by the speed of your circumstances.

Continue seeking Him.

Continue doing what is right.

Remain teachable. Remain prayerful. Remain willing to change direction when wisdom and obedience require it.

And remember that your worth before God is not determined by how much you have achieved, how quickly you have progressed, or how impressive your circumstances appear to others.

Our hope rests ultimately in Jesus Christ, not in the certainty of a comfortable earthly journey.

A Prayer for the Journey

Heavenly Father, we come to You in the Mighty Name of Jesus Christ.

You know the roads we have travelled, the disappointments we have experienced, and the uncertainties that still lie before us.

Where we have become weary, strengthen us.

Where disappointment has clouded our judgement, grant us wisdom.

Where we have placed our own desires above Your will, correct our hearts.

Teach us to remain faithful in the responsibilities You have entrusted to us, even when we cannot see what tomorrow holds.

Help us to trust You without demanding that everything unfold according to our expectations.

In the Name of Jesus Christ.

Amen.
